In the late Sixth Century, Pope Gregory I codified the music of the Roman Catholic Church (hence the term “Gregorian.”) This melody is taken from the Requiem, served in memory of the departed. The title is Latin for “day of wrath” and has been adapted by many composers, including Berlioz, Mahler, and Rachmaninoff.
